The Alternative to POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service)

For those involved in the telecommunications industry, POTS is an acronym that has a meaning which is nothing to do with smoking! POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone service, and is an important concept in a world in which people are increasingly ditching their landlines for such alternatives as virtual telephone services and digital telephone systems.

Before the advent of advanced forms of telephony such as Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), cellular telephone systems, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), traditional analog telephone systems were dominant. However, the flexibility of internet-based telecommunications services mean that POTS are typically now being viewed in the derisory way that the acronym implies.

There are several ways in which companies are seeking telecom solutions which do not follow the traditional analog model. Polycom videoconferencing is offering companies the opportunity to connect with employees on a face-to-face basis over a vast distances that at one time would have been physically impossible. Such conference call services are becoming the norm, and traditional telephony simply cannot compete with this, of course.

Digital telephone systems also enable companies to go mobile and operate Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services which are infinitely more flexible, and even more cost-effective than traditional analog telephony. Services such as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) are providing increasing flexibility for workers to not only utilize their own mobile devices in work, but also to access company networking securely when away from the office.

Additionally, virtual telephone services are connecting numerous traditional lines of communication within one convenient package. And as the fourth generation of mobile networks becomes heavily utilized worldwide, and fibre optic broadband speeds continued to increase, it is certain that such services will only grow in popularity.

Plain Old Telephone services is an expression which makes analog telecommunications seem dead in the water. And this impression is by no means mistaken.
